REVISED - Manchester Road, Tytherington

CONSULTATION NOW CLOSED - Feedback received is being reviewed and analysed.

Aim: The scheme is planned to upgrade the current advisory cycle lanes on Manchester Road from Tytherington School to Brocklehurst Way. This will allow cyclists to use the improved cycle lanes on Manchester Road to join on to quieter side roads such as Badger Avenue, Dorchester Way, and Bluebell Lane. It would also improve cycling links towards Tytherington School and further south to Macclesfield Train Station, by connecting Manchester Road to Summerlea Close, the Middlewood Way and onto the planned Black Lane scheme.

This scheme also aims to improve the route for pedestrians by improving crossing points of side roads including Badger Road and Bluebell Lane.

Current situation: The current cycle route on Manchester Road is an advisory cycle lane that cars can enter and park on. This type of cycle route discourages people from cycling.

The section of Manchester Road north of Brocklehurst Way is currently too narrow to introduce a cycle lane. This part of the wider route would be looked at as part of a potential future scheme.

Proposed solution: Following the previous consultation, feedback from stakeholders has been reviewed and the revised scheme is described and shown on plans below.

We propose to install mandatory cycle lanes and provide better segregation between motorised traffic and cyclists. In response to the previous consultation, this proposal has a reduced number of bollards and includes low-level separators (also referred to as orcas / armadillos – please see visualisation 2 below) between the junction of Dorchester Way to Brocklehurst Way. Further details include:

  • Vehicles would not be permitted to park on the cycle lane.
  • There will be breaks in the bollards to allow access to side roads, residential properties and businesses.
  • Cycle lanes would be mandatory from Tytherington School to Dorchester Way (this section of Manchester Road is too narrow to install bollards or low level separators).
  • Following consultation feedback, the bus boarders proposed previously have been replaced with bus stop bypasses for cyclists (please see visualisation 1 below). Where bus stop bypasses cannot be provided, there will be a break in the cycle lane to allow buses to stop and for passengers to get on and off the bus. The bus stop bypasses include:

  • A cycle track running behind the bus stop protected from motorised traffic.
  • A pedestrian crossing point across the cycle track between the footway and bus stop.
  • A boarding area where people get on and off the bus.
  • We are aware of the current trial re-routing the 10/10A bus service and the potential to maintain the cycle lane on the carriageway through the marked bus stops between Brocklehurst Way and Dorchester Way. The local bus companies will be consulted on long term plans for routes as part of finalising the design on this scheme. This will ensure we understand the potential to improve the cycle lane in these locations.

At Badger Road we propose to reduce the distance between crossing points by extending the footways. A raised speed table is also proposed to reduce traffic speeds and further improve the crossing point for pedestrians. The proposals also include reducing the width of the crossing point across the Beech Hall Drive side road.
